Imagine a wine that not only captures the essence of the vintage but also embodies a deep commitment to nurturing the soil it was grown in. This is the story of the new Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC®) wines from Robert Hall Winery in the Paso Robles AVA: 2024 ROC® Cabernet Sauvignon and 2025 ROC® Sauvignon Blanc (SRP $29.99). Crafted by Winemaker Amanda Gorter, these are the first commercially available ROC® wines in distribution at retail, offered exclusively through a partnership with Whole Foods Market.
This collaboration is a vital step in making values-driven, climate-smart wine accessible to the everyday consumer. As consumers increasingly make purchasing decisions shaped by values as much as quality, the ROC® and B-Corp Certified seals can be conveniently found on the front of the wine label, creating a clear, consumer-facing expression of purpose. ROC® demands high performance across three essential pillars: soil health, animal welfare integration, and worker fairness. Robert Hall is among the very first wineries in the country to earn Regenerative Organic Certified® status.
For over two decades, O’Neill Vintners & Distillers Founder & CEO, Jeff O’Neill, has been guided by an “unwavering belief in farming for the future.” This foundational mission led Robert Hall Winery to pursue the gold standard of sustainable agriculture: Regenerative Organic Certified®. This rigorous standard goes beyond basic organic practices. Think of it as farming that gives back to the land rather than just taking from it. It rebuilds soil health, supports biodiversity, and ensures the vineyard is in better shape for the next generation than it was for this one.
The pivotal moment in this journey came through extensive regenerative organic block trials carried out between 2020-2024 at Robert Hall’s estate vineyard in Paso Robles. Providing four years of hard data, these trials became the proof of concept, demonstrating tangible benefits for the planet, including a 13% increase in water retention and a striking 192% increase in CO2 absorption compared to conventional blocks. Crucially, the most compelling results were found in the wine itself. The winemaking team observed that the wine made from this regenerative organic block was qualitatively superior. It exhibited greater complexity, freshness, and vibrancy, resulting in a more nuanced wine that truly highlights the unique Paso Robles terroir.
