WINE REVIEW: Zenato 2017 Valpolicella DOC Superiore, Italy ($15)

by Andrew Chalk

A classic Valpolicella blended from 80% corvina, 10% rondinella, 10% oseleta. I am astonished at the value in the red wines of Veneto and this wine is a fine example.

TASTING NOTES

Appearance: Opaque ruby code fading to a garnet rim.

Nose: Dry red raspberry, cranberry fruit, rose perfume notes and licorice. The power in the nose is its ability to maintain its power over the length of the meal.

Palate: Robust and chewy tannins make this medium-bodied wine a fascinating thing to quaff. However, with barbecue pork ribs and burnt end of brisket from Al’s in Dallas it produced earthy flavors in the mouth that firmly asserted that this was this wine’s calling.

An excellent value, highly recommended as an everyday red wine.
