WINE REVIEW: Quinta do Vesuvio 2018 Pombal de Vesuvio, Douro, Portugal ($26)

by Andrew Chalk

This wine is from Symington Family Estates which has played a central part in the growth of the Douro region and its Port and table wines for centuries.

Pombal do Vesuvio red table wine hails from one of the great estates of the Douro Superior and home of some of the world's finest Ports. Vesuvio is also one of the region’s largest estates (336 acres under vine). This treasured quinta provides the fruit for this special wine, a unique blend of three Portuguese grapes: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Amarela.

TASTING NOTES (from the winery)

Aromas of liquorice, blackberry, dark chocolate, and Vesuvio’s signature thyme fragrance are a welcomed presence on the nose, followed by a palate of black fruit, dark chocolate, and a touch of mocha. The extraordinary freshness and fine acidity gives way to the wine's balance and impressive structure.
