WINE REVIEW: Kendall-Jackson Jackson Estate 2017 Pinot Noir, Petaluma Gap, Sonoma County, CA ($40)

by Andrew Chalk

This is a luscious, rich pinot noir that can be drunk now. The Petaluma Gap AVA (created in 2018) is one of those ‘very special’ areas. It is mapped around a gap in the California Coastal Range that lets colder air of San Pablo Bay enter Sonoma Valley. This has the effect of creating smaller grapes with thicker skins. The fruit all came from Closed Landing Vineyard. The wine was aged 10 months in 100% French oak (30% new).

Appearance: Opaque ruby core. Light purple rim;

Nose: Savory, raspberry, smoky notes, black pepper, thyme;

Palate: Rich savory raspberry, blueberry flavors. On-point acid. solid tannins.

Sample.
