WINE REVIEW: Ettore 2018 Red Wine, Mendocino County, CA ($60)

andychalk

by Andrew Chalk

Appearance: Impenetrably opaque dark ruby and violet color;

Nose: Complex earthy notes. Jammy raspberry fruit. Woody hints. Perfumy notes of roses;

Palate: Chewy tannins, medium-plus acid, dark fruit (black currant and black cherry), black pepper, licorice.

This Bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot is made from organically grown grapes and has no sulphites beyond those naturally occurring. The winemaker at Etore Wines is Ettore Biraghi - someone who I expect we shall hear a lot more about. The reason is that this is a sophisticated, distinctive red table wine that is the proverbial ‘cut above’ the field. I recommend you go to the producer’s web site and order some to try yourself. Fewer than 500 cases produced.

Sample.
