WINE REVIEW: 2018 Far Niente, Chardonnay, Napa Valley, CA ($70)

by Andrew Chalk

Far Niente is one of the ‘original’ Napa estates, having been founded in 1885 and only suppressed by Prohibition. The estate was purchased in 1979 by Gil Nickel and given a thoroughgoing restoration. It is now a beautiful property to visit, as well as a producer of beautiful wines.

The style of this wine is classic California with new French oak, ripe tropical fruit, but also a line of acid due to no malolactic fermentation.

Appearance: Bright gold color;

Nose: Bright tropical fruit (mango), vanilla, cream soda;

Palate: Firm tannic backbone, opulent tropical fruit, beautiful balance and reassuring mid-palate;

Sample.
