WINE REVIEW: 2017 Dow Vale do Bomfim, Douro, DOC ($13)

andychalk

by Andrew Chalk

The Symington family created this wine from grapes usually used in Dow port. The blend is 50% Touriga Franca, 20% Touriga Nacional, and 30% field blend. The winemaking has produced a chewy, atavistic red wine that is ideal for roasted red meat such as lamb, barbeque brisket or large game.

Appearance: Dark red opaque core leads to watery rim.

Nose: Coffee, briary, roses, raspberries, smoke, oak, thyme;

Palate: Grippy tannins, medium-plus acid, raspberries and dark fruit of blackberries. Wine is slightly shy of giving up its flavors on the palate.

Sample.
