FROM THE WIRES...
Leading viticulturist and winemaker Rodrigo Soto will focus full time on the winery started with his wife, Mai Errazuriz, in 2019
April 24, 2024, Sonoma, CA – Leading viticulturist and winemaker Rodrigo Soto has announced that he is stepping away from his position as Estate Director at Napa Valley’s Quintessa Estate and Huneeus Wines in order to devote his efforts full time to Far Mountain (www.farmountainwine.com). In 2019, Rodrigo and his wife, Mai Errazuriz, founded Far Mountain in order to work with some of the greatest vineyard sites in California and produce dazzling Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
Soto stated: “First of all, I wish to thank the Huneeus family for the privilege of working over the last 12 years with exceptional vineyards and people in the industry. Both Agustin Sr. and Agustin F. Huneeus have been mentors and friends, and my admiration for them as wine and business visionaries is limitless.” He continued, “This small project started by my wife Mai has evolved considerably, feeding us with more inspiration and creativity than I expected. It is now a moment to, very simply, commit in full.”
Soto’s wine journey began at university when he wrote his Agronomy thesis on organic farming in wine. After two years of international internships, he started working at Matetic in Chile where he began a long and fruitful relationship learning from and working with Alan York, a leading figure in the Biodynamic viticulture movement in the United States. Together they were pioneers in bringing Biodynamics to Chile. He took this background to practice at Benziger winery in Sonoma starting in 2006, contributing to expand the Biodynamic program and transform and certify multiple properties. In 2012, he returned with his family to Chile and started working for the Huneeus family, as Chief Winemaker, working to transform their South American vineyards to deliver quality, sustainability and longevity; more than 1,200 acres of vineyards were transformed and certified organic and Biodynamic. He returned to the United States in 2018 as General Manager of Quintessa. Throughout his career he has sought to unlock the potential and complexity found in great vineyard sites by paying deep attention to soils, vines and ecosystems, and to create wines of refinement, complexity and pleasure.
Mai Errazuriz states, “The response to the Far Mountain wines over the last 6 months has been astounding, and over the next two years Far Mountain will release wines from other leading vineyards, including Monte Rosso, Montecillo, and The Nunnery. It’s been a privilege to expand our relationships with leading growers in the Moon Mountain District, and it’s thrilling that Rodrigo will be able to devote his full energies in this direction.”
Far Mountain has already been named as a California winery to watch by the press and trade, with terrific reviews and high-profile placements in leading restaurants and retailers since its inaugural 2019 vintage.
