Queer-Owned VOON Wines Debuts Gruner Veltliner & Grenache

FROM THE WIRES...

On behalf of VOON, the innovative, gay-owned wine label based in San Francisco, we’re happy to announce the release of VOON’s debut Grüner Veltliner and Grenache, as well as a single vineyard Pinot Noir.

With a commitment to craftsmanship and a flair for the unexpected, all VOON wines are organically farmed, hand-picked, and hand-sorted, with a focus on low intervention to showcase the unadulterated flavors of the Sta. Rita Hills. While VOON’s inaugural release last year highlighted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this new release featuring Grüner Veltliner and Grenache is an important step in realizing founder Evan Anderson’s vision of introducing young consumers to a range of lesser-known grape varieties and wine regions. Please find more information on the latest releases below for your editorial consideration:

·       2023 VOON Sta. Rita Hills Grüner Veltliner (SRP $38): a blend from two organically-farmed vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills, including one of the highest elevation vineyards in the region, this is VOON’s first Grüner Veltliner. Made with minimal intervention, it is fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral French oak and stainless steel barrels for four months before bottling. The result is a racy wine that packs a punch of mouth-watering acidity, tropical undertones, an underlying minerality from the rocky soils, plus subtle herbaceous and pepper notes.

·       2023 VOON Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (SRP $48): VOON’s debut Grenache is sourced exclusively from the esteemed John Sebastiano vineyard nestled at a lofty elevation of 500 feet on the eastern fringe of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. This organically farmed vineyard endures relentless coastal winds and its sandy loam and limestone-rich (Linne) soils contribute to its unique terroir, making it a standout among California's Grenache plantings for its notably cool climate. With a commitment to preserving the purity of the fruit, this wine is crafted with minimal intervention. Fermented using native yeasts, it gracefully matures in 100% neutral French oak barrels for a period of 10 months, remaining untouched by fining or filtration before bottling.

·       2022 VOON ‘Nada Pinot Noir (SRP $58): The 2022 vintage is VOON’s first release Pinot Noir from this coveted single vineyard nestled in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. These sustainably farmed grapes thrive on undulating hills, planted in a soil blend of clay loam intermingled with diatomaceous earth and shale. Harvested by hand and fermented solely with native yeasts, this Pinot Noir matured in neutral French oak barrels for a generous 18 months, undergoing neither filtration nor fining before bottling. The wine’s bouquet offers vibrant notes of cherry and cranberry, while the palate offers poise and balance led by red fruit and herbaceous undertones.
