LODI RULES: Bokisch Vineyards, 2020 Albariño, ‘Las Cerezas Vineyard’, Mokelumne River, Lodi ($25)

by Andrew Chalk

Watch Lodi for Albariño, a hot variety in several areas of the US right now (SLO, Texas).

Our Story

Markus and Liz Bokisch have been producing award-winning Spanish varietals since the early 2000s. With hearts and heritage of Spain, their inspiration to produce Spanish varietal wines in California began by directly importing budwood from select vineyards in Spain, thus creating Bokisch Vineyards, nestled in the Clements Hills of the Lodi AVA. They began making wine from their estate grown and organically farmed fruit in 2000.

Our Vineyards

In 1998, Markus and Liz purchased the Las Cerezas property as their home and they developed the vineyard in 1999. This small 3-acre organic vineyard is the “Motherblock" for the Bokisch Spanish varieties. Markus selected these varieties from unique blocks in Spain. This is the first Graciano planting in the new world. The sandy loams of the Mokelumne River area is the birthplace of Lodi's wine history dating from the 1880's. They now produce a Bokisch Family Estate label from these exclusive grapes.

Our Wine

Our Estate Albariño is a pale straw color that glistens gold as you swirl it in your glass. Enchanting aromas of honeysuckle, candied lemon, fresh earth, and lime zest jump out the glass! Layered and intense, it has rewarding flavors of tangerine, citrus zest, lavender syrup, and lemon hard candy. It finishes long and lingering with a pleasant acidity that invites you to take another sip.
