There was no media event to try it so, what to do? I ponied up out of my own pocket and the moll and I checked it out.
Verdict: This is one of the great values in Dallas dining right now. But there is no saying when it will end (it is "for a limited time"). So head there right now!
We started with Lobster Bisque and Corn Chowder (the soups of the day). Both were really strong offerings.
For entrées we chose the Braised Short Rib, which had all the melt-in-the-mouth richness you want in that cut, and Steak Frites. The frites were made in house (not frozen buy-in) judging from their texture and taste, and the strip steak (specified medium rare) was an easy slice and full of taste. One nice touch at this price point -- you get a pot of béarnaise sauce with bold tarragon flavors and a subtle sweetness from the shallots.
My dessert was "Al's Famous Coconut Cream Pie" which I scarfed down (some achievement, as it is substantial) while the moll had the Key Lime Pie That came with a large scoop of ice cream that she hoovered up in the restaurant, taking the pie home for lunch the next day.
We can't overlook the included bread basket. Even at this budget price it offers a choice -- classic baguette or pumpernickel, offered with butter. The regular wine list is an á la carte offering with over 20 wines by-the-glass. I had a Jordan Vineyards Chardonnay ($24) from California which paired famously with the lobster bisque. The moll hit a raspberry mocktail which was both steller and fluorescent!
Great service too from Gabriel.
Helpings are large so expect that (unless you're a piggy like me) to have takehome.
