FROM THE WIRES...
Australia’s Barossa Valley has been gracing the world with well-known regional classics, such as Shriaz and Cabernet Sauvignon for many years, and never faulting on its quality and excellence. The team at Napa-based New Frontier Wine Co. has just the bottle to intrigue any wine drinker, while sticking to the classics.
In collaboration with Winemaker Amelia Nolan, and consultants Alberto Antonini and Pedro Parra, Kin by Alkina explores different parts of their vineyard each year and, from there, trials ideas and blends, resulting in unique, exciting and innovative blends and expressions. Beyond what’s in the bottle, the artwork tells a story of its own, created by Adnyamathanha artist Damien Coulthard, he used ochre pigments to create his interpretation of the energy from the soils and rocks of Alkina (Kin Field White) and the night sky (Kin Field Red).
2021 Kin Shiraz (SRP: $36), which will be available soon via New Frontier Wine Co.’s website, shows both the superb ripeness and power of the region but also with delicious detail. It is a deep ruby in color and opens with plush mulberry Shiraz fruits. It impresses the palate with savory liquorice allsorts, black pepper and earth, plus a touch of stalky herbs lifting this far above your run of the mill Barossan.
The ‘Kin by Alkina’ wines celebrate a community of makers, thinkers and artists, who aid in giving a sense of wonder and astonishment to all who discover them. Start the new year right with curiosity, discovery, and excellent wine. Are you interested in tasting 2021 Kin Shiraz for any updating coverage you may be working? I’d be happy to share images, tech sheets, or any additional assets.
