WINE REVIEW: Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Excellence, Mendocino, CA ($26)

by Andrew Chalk

Appearance: Glorious orange sunset color with tiny bubbles;

Nose: Bread, brioche, rose flowers, strawberries;

Palate: Strawberry fruit. Firm phenolic backbone.

Scharffenberger is one of the longest-established sparkling wine producers in California. For this wine they stepped out of their Anderson Valley home to Monterey County for a blend of 58% chardonnay and 42% pinot noir. The wine is made with the méthode traditionelle, the same method required in Champagne.

The result is a wine with a fresh, approachable character that can be served at celebrations or with food.
