WINE REVIEW: Bodegas Montecillo, Rioja, Spain ($15)

by Andrew Chalk

A tremendous value within its category and within the wine universe. This wine is a fully mature and ready-to-drink oak aged tempranillo (with 8% garnacha and 2% mazuelo). Wine Searcher reports "Aged 65 percent in French oak barrels and 35 percent in American. 24 months ageing for the Tempranillo, 22 for the Mazuelo". This was followed by 18 months ageing in bottle.

It is a medium-bodied wine so will work well with pork, veal and red-sauce pasta dishes. The nose is open structured and red fruit permeates it and the palate.
