WINE REVIEW: 2018 Domaine de Cala, 'Prestige', Coteaux Varois en Provence, France ($26)

A classy rose embodying a punch unexpected from such a pale wine. The nose exhibits white peach and citrus and hints of woody notes from the use of a little mature oak. The flavors start with white peach and lemon, and then echo with notes of spices. A firm acid level gives structure to the whole.

Ideal with seafood.

Domaine de Cala is a product of the family vineyards of renowned Los Angeles chef Joachim Splichal (Patina). Now owned with his two sons to ensure succession. This wine is 40% Grenache, 29% Syrah, 16% Rolle (Vermentino), and 15% Cinsault. It is widely available across the U.S.

Sample.
